Beyond Beck: Design Of Schematic Maps From (Representational Epistemic) First Principles

چکیده

The Representational Epistemic approach to the design of notations and visualizations is used to create a new design transit map that is a fundamental departure from the near universal format that has nodes for stations, lines for tracks and symbols for details. Instead the new design exploits a containernode-symbol-colour format for stations, tracks, details and identities. The London Underground is used to provide an exemplar of the new design.

What the Quest for Tactile Maps Can Teach Us about Making Interactive Maps

For those people who are visually impaired or blind there are tactile maps that can be read by touch. Like in visual maps, the tactual entities representing geographical features have to be carefully selected and placed on the map with respect to technical and sensory considerations, i.e. abstraction. A schematic map is abstracted beyond technical needs. It can support map-readers to better gra...

The Cognitive Reality of Schematic Maps

In graphics and language, schematization is an important method to emphasize certain aspects and to deemphasize others. Different disciplines use schematization for different reasons. In cartography, graphic schematization is one aspect of map generalization. In contrast, cognitive science addresses schematization as a method to intentionally emphasize certain aspects of knowledge beyond techni...

Probably Good Diagrams for Learning: Representational Epistemic Recodification of Probability Theory

The representational epistemic approach to the design of visual displays and notation systems advocates encoding the fundamental conceptual structure of a knowledge domain directly in the structure of a representational system. It is claimed that representations so designed will benefit from greater semantic transparency, which enhances comprehension and ease of learning, and plastic generativi...

VAST Improvements to Diagrammatic Scheduling Using Representational Epistemic Interface Design

REpresentational EPistemic Interface Design (REEP-ID) advocates exploiting the abstract structure of a target domain as the foundation for building cohesive diagrammatic representations. Previous research explored the application of this approach to the display and optimisation of solutions to complex, data rich, real world problems with promising results. This paper demonstrates the applicatio...

Geometric distortion of schematic network maps

The famous London Underground map shows the Thames and named metro stations with railway tracks as straight line segments. Strictly speaking, it is not a map that aims at a metrically accurate depiction of the network, but it is rather a diagram that accentuates the topological relations of Underground stations. Henry “Harry” C. Beck produced the first sketch for the famous diagram in 1931. His...
